My name is Kate Bye. MS, NBC-HWC, CCSP.
I am a National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach and a Certified Career Services Provider with a master's degree in Psychology---an educator at heart.
I had a health challenge a few years ago, it took several doctors before I was diagnosed and treated. Managing a chronic illness can be a struggle in our healthcare system. Sorting it all out was such a struggle that it inspired me to help others facing their own health challenges.
I am a creative, dynamic, energetic, charismatic, uplifting, empowering individual and I want to see health and wellness have a more prominent place in the world. We, humans, know what we need to do, we just need that help with the how. At the end of every day, many of us desire to feel good and ultimately, we have the power right in our own hands!
I teach Psychology at the college level as an adjunct instructor and have since 2007. At one point, I was adjuncting at three different colleges! I was hired full-time at one of those colleges in 2009 and worked there as an Academic Coach until 2018 where I supported students facing academic dismissal. I loved that work so very much! It is just like what we face in health coaching, people who want good outcomes, but are resistant to the process of change. I used Motivational Interviewing (MI) with the students in my program and found that this was exactly what the students needed – someone to honor them as the expert on themselves and to treat them with respect and dignity. MI was a perfect fit! I even modified a group curriculum for use with the students I worked with, complete with the author’s permission! It was written for work with substance use, and although students may have had that need, for my position, it became an Academic Support version. If you are curious about the original resource, it is Fields, A.E. (2005). Curriculum-Based Motivation Group: A Five Session Motivational Interviewing Group Intervention.
In teaching Psychology, I love empowering students and helping them apply the principles of Psychology to their own lives, we have learned so much! Let’s all benefit!
I have a discussion series called YOU: The Student, The Human, and Future You. It is all about developing the whole student – applying Psychology to how they “student”, their lives, or where they are going. “Studenting” is more than time management and study strategies, although those are also very important, You: The Student included tasks about how Positive & Negative Words impact our physiology, an exploration of their Values, Self-Care – it’s what matters, and others. You: The Human gives students an opportunity to apply the concepts we are learning in class to their lives. Future You dances through what is possible and how Psychology applies to their journey.
If you are curious and would like to read more, I presented about the series at the 2022 Southeastern Teaching of Psychology conference and was able to include a summary of my presentation in their Teaching Tips: A Compendium of Conference Presentations on Teaching, 2021-2022.
MISSION:
My mission in life is to live fully and help others do the same through Health & Wellness Coaching.
VISION:
To help people live the best lives possible.
COACHING PHILOSOPHY:
You are the expert on you. That is the main principle that will drive our work together. I seek to partner with you as you move toward the life you want to be living.
The National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) is working toward getting health coaching nationally regulated, in doing so, they have collaborated with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) to offer the credentialing exam and their aim is to set the bar high. I trained at a NBHWC approved program at Randolph Community College, the program was intensive and included three complete rounds of supervised peer coaching with ample feedback from our teachers and visiting mentors, all of whom were practicing coaches. Throughout the class, we applied the health coaching process and theories aligned with the NBHWC, while also learning about biometrics and health conditions that clients might encounter. If you would like to learn more about the collaboration of the NBHWC and NBME, as well as the process to get the field regulated, please see the article from the NBME listed in the references at the bottom of this page.
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 6 in 10 adults in the United States have a chronic disease, and 4 in 10 have two or more chronic diseases. Chronic diseases include conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. These conditions are often preventable and manageable through healthy lifestyle choices, and we believe that National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches can play a key role in helping individuals prevent and manage chronic diseases by providing personalized guidance and support."

The National Career Development Association (NCDA) is an organization that supports career service providers. The Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP) credential requires Facilitating Career Development training and passing the NCDA credentialing exam.
In addition to earning the credential, I presented at the 2022 NCDA Conference in Anaheim, CA (and online) about overcoming the grief of separation from a workplace through a three-workshop program for struggling job seekers, to help them reject rejection and flip that script. This could be any workplace separation that isn't voluntary. Separating from an employer means that you are also being separated from your work community. Personally, I found the program very effective and was excited to share it with career services professionals from all over the US and beyond.
As a CCSP, I can help you find employment that contributes to your health and wellness. Let's talk about Career Coaching, if that is a need you have.
